Review Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)

#RalphBreaksTheInternet (2018): 7/10

Ralph Breaks The Internet is the follow-up to 2012’s ‘Wreck-It Ralph’. We return to Litwark’s Arcade some 6 years later, where Vanellope’s racer arcade game “Sugar Rush” is at risk of being scrapped after the game’s steering wheel breaks, unless Ralph and Vanellope can travel along the newly installed WiFi and find a replacement.

The film moves away from ‘Wreck-It’s’ humble origins within the arcade itself and into the vastness of the World Wide Web, which is both good and bad. There was a certain charm and nostalgic feel about the arcade environment, its characters and gaming nods, which we loved having grown up in that era. The Internet direction does though bring with it an endless stream of possibilities; the ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ story in effect evolving just as technology is evolving all around us.

There are some welcome character additions to the ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ story, in particular Gal Gadot’s Shank, who is coolness personified, and a racer at heart, much to Vanellope’s delight. Mostly though, the film will be remembered for all of the references and nods to popular websites, social media and excellent spins on viral videos, which it has a lot of fun with. The writers even find time to poke fun at some of Disney’s most well-known stories and characters, which is where most of the laughs will no doubt stem from.

The final act really focusses on the nature of both Ralph’s and Vanellope’s characters and the friendship that they share, with some intriguing revelations, and although the film’s plot overall is less watertight and meaningful than its predecessor, Ralph Breaks The Internet still entertains throughout and teaches some important life lessons, in true Disney fashion.
